Yesterday, 3rd of November, marked the 50th anniversary since a young Russian dog became the first mammal in space.

Tragically, it was a one way trip...she was never meant to come home and seven hours after she left the earth, she died of overheating.

5 months later, she and her capsule broke up in orbit...in a fitting shooting star.

Next time you want to remember a true hero, remember Laika...because she didn't ask if she wanted to go, but she prooved that we all could follow.

RIP Laika.

It's horrible how Laika was left up outer space, but she proved to be heroic in doing so, ey?

That doesn't fit my understanding of heroism. If someone just happens to be in the way of a bullet meant for me, he is not a hero for saving my life. There needs to be a certain amount of voluntariness.

That said, I'm all for honoring Laika's name as an animal who suffered injustice for what humans considered the greater good.

You can be a hero and not know dude, and without volunteering. Take the firemen at Chernobyl. They didn't know that putting out the fire would save millions of lives, they were just doing their jobs. They didn't know about the radiation cloud or the dust. They were still heroes.

Poor Laika. She will be in our hearts forever. This reminds me that the most famous spanish pop-rock group of the 80s, Mecano, tributed to her in their song Laika. [link]

I don,t know if anybody will understand the song lyrics, but the music is so beautiful....

So often people overlook the animals that gave their lives without a say so to help us humans. I salute you Laika, may you be remembered forever.

I had this in my Google calendar and meant to do something to commemorate it, but I didn't end up having time. I'm glad someone did, though.
